S ELLIOT ST TOWNHOUSE

PROJECT SCOPE

The South Elliott Street Townhouse is a 4-story two-family home located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Palette’s task was to completely gut renovate the interior and extend the home into the rear yard, while maintaining and restoring the landmarked façade.

DESIGN APPROACH

The design focused on how to integrate a modern and minimal interior style with the historic nature of the building shell.

The primary conceptual strategy was to insert a new light-filled circulation core into the center of the home which would provide light and fresh air to all of the central spaces below.

COMPONENTS OF THE DESIGN: SHELL, OPEN FLOOR PLANS, SKYLIT STAIR CORE

SKYLIT STAIR CORE

The stair was designed to be as minimal in form as possible, thus not obstructing light, while still providing a visual element on each floor whether it be an open floorplan or a pair of private bedrooms.

CONTEXTUAL DETAILING

The design of the house respects the historic character of the neighborhood and of the original house. The use of a bright color creates a lively contribution to the streetscape, while the historic detail creates a memorable space in the back yard.
